Using OpenClaw via an OpenAI subscription — is it sustainable for long-term, complex automation work?
Recently, OpenAI added the ability to use OpenClaw through a subscription tier, which is exciting because it’s the first time I’ve seen an AI system that can actually *take actions*, not just suggest them.
In the past, AI could tell me *how* to edit a video, but it couldn’t do the work. With OpenClaw, that changes. It can execute multi-step workflows using AI models, including coding and tool use, which opens the door to real automation.
However, there’s very little clear information about practical usage limits. There’s no transparent breakdown of:
* How credits work,
* how often they refresh,
* how quickly they get consumed by complex tasks,
* and what those limits actually mean in real-world workflows.
My use case involves long, multi-step reasoning chains with multi-step coding and automation. Specifically, I want to automate video editing pipelines, including fully automated timelines and complex motion-graphics-style animations, so I can focus on what I actually enjoy: writing scripts and shaping video essays.
I’m currently on the Go tier, but I’m trying to decide whether upgrading to Plus or Pro is worth it, *specifically for OpenClaw*. My main concern isn’t quality, but sustainability: running out of credits mid-workflow, throttling during long sessions, or hitting hidden caps that make it unreliable for production use.
After a long prompting phase, I’ve already trained it to match my editing style. At this point, it’s consistently saving me time and can handle editing decisions and suggestions across videos. The remaining question is whether OpenClaw is viable as a **core production tool** for automated video editing, and whether it’s cost-effective compared to alternative automation setups.
For those who’ve tested OpenClaw across different tiers:
* How quickly do credits drain with complex, multi-step tasks?
* Are higher tiers meaningfully more reliable for long workflows?
